Glimpses of the culture

4.2 Funeral Shoes.jpg

Funerary rites and rituals are the most intricate of all Hmong traditions. The Hmong believe the spiritual journey to the ancestral land is fraught with danger so the deceased is attired with the appropriate tools to navigate these obstacles. Khau, or funeral shoes, are handmade woven and/or hemp shoes that help the soul across the caterpillar river and over the Green Worm Mountain on their spiritual journey toward their ancestral homeland.

4.3 Farming.jpg

Predict what is happening in the story cloth. The tapestry of colors and intricate stitching tell the stories of farming. Showing their traditions of sowing, tending, and reaping. The image, as a whole, represents the harmony of the earth and the Hmong people.
